July 2008 Meeting

Holmes Valley Quilters is a not-for-profit quilting guild located in the Holmes Valley area of the Florida panhandle. It was established in January 2008 to encompass the rural counties of Holmes, Washington, Jackson, and Walton.

Based on information from the book Washington Florida’s Twelfth County by E.W. Carswell, the name “Holmes Valley” was given to this area by U. S. Major General Andrew Jackson and his men in the early 1800’s when they crossed West Florida in route from Fort Gadsden to capture Pensacola. Jackson’s Army and horses swam across the Choctawhatchee River. The name “Holmes” is believed to come from Indian Chief Holmes, thus the entire area was known as Holmes Valley.  This is why this name was chosen for our guild.  We wanted something that all of us had in common with living in this beautiful part of Florida and of course our love of quilting.

Holmes Valley Quilters meets the 3rd Thursday of each month at the Library Annex Building in Bonifay, Florida from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Please contact us at holmesvalleyquilters@hotmail.com  if you have any questions or need additional information.
